Dad, what are you doing... “I am Becoming Local!” Standing in the center of Basco looking at stands with local products in #Batanes... I noticed my dad wasn’t just wearing his t-shirt anymore. Now, he had something on that would protect him from all elements of weather!! My dad was wearing a Kanayi!
Made using voyavoy leaves, also known as the #Philippines date palm... these traditional all weather outfits are worn by males here in Batanes. It may look big and intimidating, but this hand made clothing is actually very comfortable! I really didn’t want to take it off.
They actually sell Kanayi around the island, but these are aren’t just souvenirs. They are a reminder of the tough elements Ivatans have to deal with when working and living here. They are a tribute to the ingenuity and creativity of locals... survival.
I love how open Ivatans are to sharing this part of there culture with visitors. So... WHO WORE IT BETTER?! One day at a time, One becoming local moment at a time... #BecomingFilipino
