Is it already fall?! Nope! This is a lovely Norway maple tree (Acer platanoides) in a local Centennial, Colo. park. The sun is was shining at the perfect angle to capture these colors. “Norway maples are hard wooded and less susceptible to storm damage [than silver maples]. The leaves are very dark green in color. The tree has a rounded crown which casts a dense shade. If planted in a dry or hot site, the leaves will scorch in the summer heat. Several popular varieties selected for spring and summer leaf color include Deborah, Schwedler and Royal Red.” - CSU Extension Plant Talk, 1733 - Maple Trees . . . 📷: @birdbrain82 #CSUExtension #ColoradoStateUniversity #Colorado #Gardening #Gardener #Garden #Plants #ColoradoGarden #ColoradoGardening #ColoradoGardeners #ColoradoGardens #ColoradoLife #ColoradoLiving #ColoradoMasterGardener #ColoradoMasterGardeners #MasterGardeners #MasterGardener #MasterGardenersofInstagram #centennialcolorado #arapahoecounty #csuextensionarapahoecounty #proudtobe #science #sciencecommunication #coloradogram #nature #trees #maple #norwaymaple #southsuburban

This is Technetium! Technetium is unusually unstable for a period 5 transition metal— it only occurs in minuscule quantities in nature. As a result, technetium is mainly produced synthetically, usually through radioactive decay of other elements. So, Technetium here may be an artificial lifeform of sorts! This fun book is the essence of Science Communication! With detailed illustrations and only using the most common words in the English language, Randall Monroe explains complex stuff using simple words— no jargon here! Some of my favorites were: Flying space truck = rocket 🚀 Thinking bag = brain 🧠 Sky boat with turning wings = helicopter 🚁 Shape checker = lock 🔐 In thinking about a recent paper on multilingual scicomm, maybe future iterations of this concept could be done in different languages?? @anamaporras #scicomm #science #everydayscience #sciengage #stemengagement #sciencebooks #thingexplainer #scienceillustration #sciencecommunication

chichen itza. watercolor and pastel. Jessica Monterrosa Mena. @mojoejojo_ . the temple of Kukulcan in the pre-Colombian Maya city of Chichen Itza, located in Yucatán, Mexico. . this breathtaking architectural wonder displays an interesting phenomena. On both the Spring and Autumn equinoxes, the pyramid’s northwest corner casts a curious shadow on the side of the temple steps that evokes an image of a slithering serpent 🐍. the God Kukulcan was also known as Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, so this was a particularly symbolic event. . #artandscience #art #sciencecomm #sciencecommunication #biota #chichenitza

Save the coral reefs!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Seriously, if we don't start taking care of them now, then they will become a thing of the past. There are 3 main culprits attributing to this disaster: ocean acidification, rising sea temperatures, and sun exposure.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As the ocean's surface absorbs more carbon dioxide, it becomes more acidic as the ocean becomes depleted of carbonates. The CO2 is later converted into carbonic acid, which is self-explanatory.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Rising temperatures of the sea reduce the levels of calcium that are vital to organisms for life. In the case of our coral reefs, they are heavily dependent on algae for their source of energy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sun exposure goes hand-in-hand with the rising temperatures of the sea; HOWEVER, some studies are also showing algal use phototaxis (follow light) to create algal blooms. These blooms are variable in their nature either causing acidification on their own, or making for shady spots and hindering lights natural ability to serve as an energy source. Long rant, but moral of the story, our oceans are over-exposed to sunlight currently.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Additionally, as an unintended consequence of the mass amounts of global change, changes in storm patterns have led to the destruction of these coral reefs. Stronger, more frequent storms have been hitting in areas that historically were untouched.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #chemistry #chem #scicomm #biology #science #sciencecommunication #lfl #scienceporn #instagood #themoreyouknow #molecules #STEM #physics #sciencefacts #scienceiscool #cleanenergy #alternativeenergy #stopcoralbleaching #climatechange #coralreef #climate #environment #conservation #sustainability #reducereuserecycle

Why choose STEM? Meet Maria Victoria Faith Garcia, or Maffy, a PhD in Health and Science Technology student, majoring in Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases. “I wanted to become a medical doctor in the beginning. It was devastating to realize that maybe I was not suitable for medicine. SWB #3 🧪 (EN) Let’s meet Claudia Alarcón López. She is from Mexico and she is in her last year of Engineering in Nanotechnology and Chemical Sciences at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey. She is an outstanding science communicator and one of the first people I met when creating this account. She has supported me in this journey from day 1 and I am so grateful I have met her! • • 🥼Her science communication journey is amazing! She started her account because of 5 main reasons: • ✔She wants to show how women in STEM can shine. • ✔She wants to remove the stigma that there is in Mexico about how scientists are dangerous/ boring (because we are not!) • ✔She also wants to eliminate the stereotypes of women in STEM. She believes that women can be scientists and also be passionate about other things such as dancing, learning other languages, or any other activity. • ✔She wants to help understand what nanotechnology is and remove fear and ignorance on this topic (and many other topics she covers). • ✔Finally, she wants to spread study opportunities. scholarships, jobs to the scientific community. • • Now, let’s talk about Mexico! Mexico is a beautiful country. According to WTO, it is the main tourist destination of Latin America. It has 32 cultural or natural sites that are considered by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. It is absolutely worth it to go and visit. It is a rich and diverse country with amazing people! • • *Spanish version in the comments/ versión en español en los comentarios* ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ • • #scientistswithoutborders #science #happy #international #mexico #canada #peru #world #scientists #followme #postoftheday #research #world #sciencecommunication #ciencia #investigacion #cientfica #sigueme #newpost #nanotechnology #technology #latina #latinasinstem #womeninstem #steminist #sciencewithoutborders

No więc oto jestem. Niedoszła romanistka i animatorki kultury, doszła pedagożka i nauczycielka jogi. 🙏🏻

**The SARS-CoV-2 Virion and Its Proteins** 🐍 Although all the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) proteins are potential drug targets, some are likely to be more easy to find a drug against, in part because they play principal roles in the viral lifecycle and also lack human protein homologues. Examples include the spike glycoprotein, the papain-like protease, the chymotrypsin-like main protease, and the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Found in the montane forests and foothills of southeast Asia, this beautifully-patterned snake (Deinagkistrodon acutus; IUCN = ??) boasts names such as the Chinese moccasin, the sharp-nosed viper and the snorkel viper, yet one name stands out as the hundred-pacer viper 🐍 ➖ According to legend, its venom is so incredibly toxic that the bitten one will only be able to walk 100 steps before dying. Though an exaggeration and a myth, this snake does possess hemorrhagic toxins in its venom, which is actually being used in research to aid in blood clot treatments of certain cardiovascular diseases ❣️

My professor told me not to worry about the test but as soon as I got out of the small office, I walked back to my apartment feeling like the world would crush me. I went into my room and was too shocked to cry so I just looked at my desk where the picture of the A+ was. I almost tore it up and threw it away and honestly, I had already done that in my head. So many thoughts came to me on why I wasn’t good enough and who I was as a person because of a score on a test. I only let my mind spiral for a couple of minutes and then I directed my it to thinking of getting that A and that my success was inevitable. A couple of days passed, and I was back on the grind. My chemistry professor asked me to stay after class to talk to me for a minute. He asked if I was free that afternoon and I said that in a couple hours I would be, then he said, “come to my office then.” When I went, his office was packed with students trying to understand what they did wrong on their tests. My professor grabbed a packet of papers and led me to one of the study cubicles and told me I had another chance on the test. As I took it, I understood all of the questions and felt really good about it. I finished and brought it back to the office and went home. Fast forward a week my professor asked to see me again and gave me the test back. I got a 97% which got me back to my A. By the end of the semester I got my 4.0! I had many more experiences like the one I just shared, in many of my other classes which showed me that as long as we believe in ourselves a lot does become possible even though in the moment it seems our world will end. I know that grades aren’t everything and learning is the most important part, but it was amazing to me that I could accomplish a goal against all odds. I should never have gotten that A but keeping my mind focused on what I wanted helped it materialize into my physical world. #womeninscience #womeninstem #science #stem #scientist #research #scicomm #manifestation #steminist #womenintech #engineeringgals #womenempowerment #instascience #sciencecommunication #chemicalengineering #stemgirls #researcher #researchlife #biology #gradschool #womendoingscience
